Disclaimer: This checker only tests the format and check digit of a GSTIN and decodes its parts; it does not confirm that a registration exists, is active or belongs to the business named, and a valid format is not proof of a genuine registration. Always verify a GSTIN on the official GST portal (gst.gov.in) before relying on it. Results are estimates for general information only and are not tax, legal, accounting or financial advice. They depend entirely on the figures you enter and may not reflect your actual costs, rates or obligations. Please consult your chartered accountant (CA) or tax adviser before relying on them for invoicing, pricing, tax filing or any business decision. Questions

GSTIN questions.

What does a GSTIN contain?

A GSTIN has 15 characters: a 2-digit state code, the 10-character PAN of the business, a digit for the number of registrations under that PAN in the state, the letter Z by default, and a check digit calculated from the first 14 characters.

Does this tool confirm the GSTIN is active?

No. It checks the format and the check digit and decodes the state and PAN, which catches typing mistakes and made-up numbers. To confirm the registration is active and see the legal name, use the 'Search Taxpayer' option on the official GST portal (gst.gov.in).

Why does the check digit matter?

The last character is calculated from the other 14. If one character is mistyped, the check digit almost always stops matching, so invoices with a wrong GSTIN can be caught before they're issued.

What do the letters in the PAN part mean?

The fourth character of the PAN shows the type of taxpayer, for example P for an individual, C for a company, F for a firm or LLP, H for a Hindu undivided family and T for a trust.

Can my invoices check GSTINs automatically?

Yes. Our free GST billing software checks every customer GSTIN and sets the place of supply from it.
