Commerce OS / Reduce RTO
Reduce RTO

Fewer COD orders coming back.

Most RTO is decided before the parcel leaves — an unserviceable pincode, a vague address, a customer unsure when it will arrive. D2 Commerce OS fixes those at checkout, then tracks every failed attempt so it's handled the same day.

Where RTO comes from

Paying for shipping twice.

Orders you can't deliverCOD orders accepted from pincodes your couriers or riders don't reliably reach.
Addresses that don't resolveMissing landmarks and wrong localities found by the rider at the door, not at checkout.
Failures nobody follows upA failed attempt sits in a courier dashboard until it quietly turns into a return.
How it works

Fix it at checkout. Catch it at the door.

Serviceability before the cart

Customers enter their PIN first and see the delivery promise, so unserviceable orders aren't taken in the first place.

Addresses that resolve

Address, locality and delivery pin resolve while the customer types — four fields, one screen.

Every exception on the order

Failed and undelivered orders are flagged by stage and age, so the team calls the customer the same day instead of finding out from a return.

Cash accounted for

COD collected, handed over and banked is tracked per order, so a delivered-but-unpaid order can't hide.

Act on the pattern

Tighten serviceability or switch payment options in the pincodes where failed deliveries cluster.

Questions

What people ask before a walkthrough.

What is RTO in ecommerce?

Return to origin — an order that was shipped but came back undelivered, usually a COD order the customer refused or couldn't be reached for. You pay for shipping both ways and the stock is tied up in transit.

Why are RTO rates high on COD orders?

Common causes are orders to pincodes you can't reliably serve, incomplete or wrong addresses, customers who weren't sure when the order would arrive, and slow follow-up on failed attempts.

How does D2 Commerce OS help reduce RTO?

It tackles the causes before and after dispatch: a pincode serviceability check and delivery promise before the cart, address and locality resolved at checkout, every delivery exception recorded against the order, and a view of failed and undelivered orders so the team can act the same day.

Can we see RTO by area or pincode?

Yes. Reports can be filtered by day, area, PIN, payment mode, rider, coupon and product, so you can see where failed deliveries cluster and adjust serviceability or payment options there.

Does this work with our courier partners?

Yes. Orders can go to your own riders, a 3PL or a hyperlocal partner; status comes back into the same order record either way.
