Shopify doesn't charge a transaction fee on cash on delivery. But COD is rarely free: courier fees, parcels that come back, cash stuck with couriers and hours of reconciliation add up. Here is where the money goes, a calculator for your own numbers, and seven ways to bring it down.
Most couriers and shipping aggregators charge a COD fee on each COD shipment — a flat amount or a percentage of the order value, whichever is higher. It is charged on delivered COD orders, on top of shipping.
When a buyer refuses a COD parcel or can't be reached, it comes back. You usually pay shipping both ways and earn nothing. For many Indian D2C stores this is the single biggest COD cost.
COD cash reaches you only when the courier remits it — commonly a few days to a week after delivery. At steady volume that is a permanent block of working capital sitting outside your bank.
COD confirmation, fake-order filtering and RTO-prediction apps each charge a monthly or per-order fee.
Someone has to match courier remittance files against Shopify orders, chase short payments and fix returned orders in the books. It is slow, and missed shortfalls are lost money.
Change the figures to match your store. Defaults are illustrative, not benchmarks — use your courier's rate card.
Excludes app fees and staff time. Shipping on delivered orders is not counted as a COD cost.
D2 Commerce OS does steps 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 for you on top of your Shopify store: orders confirmed on WhatsApp, addresses checked before dispatch, failed attempts flagged the same day, and every COD rupee tracked from doorstep to bank. Shopify does not charge a transaction fee on manual payment methods such as cash on delivery. The costs of COD come from elsewhere: the courier's COD handling fee, return (RTO) shipping when a COD parcel is refused, COD confirmation apps, and the time it takes to reconcile courier remittances.
Couriers and shipping aggregators commonly charge a COD handling fee of a flat amount per shipment or a percentage of the order value, whichever is higher — often in the range of ₹30–₹50 or around 1.5–2.5%. Check your own rate card; it varies by courier, plan and volume.
When a COD parcel is refused you usually pay forward shipping and return shipping, you earn nothing, and the product may come back damaged or late for resale. On many Indian D2C stores a meaningful share of COD orders return, which is why RTO is often the largest COD cost.
Shipping aggregators commonly remit COD a few days to about a week after delivery, depending on plan; faster remittance is often available for an extra fee. Until it lands, that cash is working capital you cannot use.
Usually not — for many Indian categories a large share of buyers still prefer COD. The better move is to keep COD and cut its cost: confirm orders, check addresses and pincodes, nudge buyers to prepay, and reconcile remittances daily.
COD is built in: orders are confirmed on WhatsApp, addresses and pincodes are checked before dispatch, failed attempts are flagged the same day, and every COD rupee is tracked from doorstep to bank with shortfalls flagged. It works on top of your Shopify store.
