The rules for your own website versus a marketplace, and what changes when you ship outside your state.
Your own store is not a marketplace, so the normal rules apply. Within your state and under the threshold you can sell without GST registration and issue a bill of supply instead of a tax invoice. The moment you ship goods to a buyer in another state, registration becomes compulsory regardless of turnover. Most Indian online stores ship nationally, so most register early.
Amazon, Flipkart and Meesho are e-commerce operators under GST. In practice they ask for a GSTIN at onboarding, and marketplace sales carry tax collected at source. A limited route exists for unregistered sellers selling within their state through an operator, but marketplace policies vary, so check the one you want to join.
Before: keep a product list with HSN codes and prices, and keep sales records from the first order. After: every order needs a GST invoice with your GSTIN, HSN, rate and place of supply. A store that generates the invoice with the order saves hours each month. D2 Commerce OS does this on every plan, and the free GST billing software covers offline sales.
Not if you sell from your own website within your state under the threshold (₹40 lakh for goods in most states). You must register once you ship goods to another state or sell on most marketplaces.
No. Inter-state supply of goods requires GST registration regardless of turnover.
Your GSTIN, invoice number and date, buyer details, HSN codes, taxable value, GST rate and amount, and place of supply. A store that creates the invoice with the order handles this automatically.
